The countertenor voice at a glance

A countertenor is a male singer whose performing range sits in alto or mezzo territory, conventionally G3 to G5, usually reached through a developed falsetto or head register. The defining shift is the move out of full voice into that upper register, not a gear change within it.

A contralto covers similar notes with a female voice's full chest register underneath, where a countertenor works mostly in falsetto.

What a countertenor is

Countertenor describes function rather than anatomy: a male singer whose usable performing range sits where a female alto or mezzo would sing, generally reached through a highly developed falsetto or head register. In popular music the label attaches to falsetto specialists whose upper register is the whole point of the voice.

The full-voice and falsetto figures for these singers are frequently conflated in circulation, which is why the cited spans look enormous.
